Black cats and Jack-o’-lantern

Many Halloween customs come from the ancient Celts.  It was their belief that on Halloween all those people who had died during the year were gathered up and taken to Druid heaven; however, those people who had been bad were turned into cats and not taken. The really evil people were turned into black cats.

Irish immigrants to North America took the tradition of carving out turnips and putting a hot coal inside.  They then put this on their doorsteps at Halloween to keep away evil spirits.  In the US, the Irish soon discovered that the indigenous pumpkins were larger and easier to carve into jack-o’-lanterns.
